Eye Health

Supplements people take for their eyes, and an honest look at what the research does and doesn't show. The three ingredients most often sold for eye health (lutein and zeaxanthin, astaxanthin and bilberry) each have their own buying guide, and there is an overview of the evidence for all of them, plus a full review of Performance Lab Vision, an all-in-one formula that combines several.

The strongest evidence in this area comes from the AREDS2 trial in people who already have age-related macular degeneration. Its main comparison was not statistically significant, with more modest signals in secondary and longer-term analyses, so it is worth reading the claims on any label with some scepticism. Astaxanthin also appears under joint and skin health, where it is better known for skin benefits.
